  • Convept inventories are an educational tool which may be used to assess and identify common misconceptions that students might commence a subject, course or program with. When applied at the beginning and end of a subject, course or program comparison between the pre- and post-test results allow a objective measure to be developed of improvement in understanding of fundamental concepts of the subject, course or program. A concept inventory has been developed and used over the last two years in a first year material and energy balance subject. Results to date indicate that the concept inventory may be a useful tool. The concept inventory developed is presented and discussed in this paper.
