  • The high porous chitosan microspheres introduced sulfur atoms (EDTSC) were newly synthesized to apply to a selective recovery of precious metals from spent catalysts, plating wastes and wastes in the field of electronic industries. The preparation of porous chitosan beads was performed by dehydration from chitosan o/w/o emulsions using difference of osmotic pressure from sodium chloride w/o emulsions. The ethylene disulfide groups were introduced the high porous chitosan microspheres as a selective ligand for precious metals such as palladium (II), gold (III) and platinum(IV). The adsorption behavior of various metal ions on EDTSC was examined from hydrochloric acid using batchwise method. EDTSC exhibited high selectivity for precious metals such as palladium (II), gold(III) and platinum(IV) over base metals in hydrochloric acid. The selective adsorption of palladium(II) from nickel(II) in metal plating wastes was performed. The desorption of palladium(II) was easily performed using aqueous thiouea solution. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherms of palladium (II) were measured at various temperatures to determine the thermodynamic parameters in the adsorption of palladium (II).
